This function responds to a growing demand from users, who use WhatsApp not only for informal conversations, but also to exchange personal, work or sensitive information. In that scenario, Meta, the company that owns the platform, seeks to offer tools that provide greater control over privacy without the need to resort to external applications or complex configurations.

What is chat restriction and how does it work
The chat restriction is a feature that allows you to hide specific conversations within WhatsApp. Unlike archiving a chat, which only moves it to the end of the list, this option makes it invisible on the main screen and protects it through an identity verification system. Once activated, the conversation is moved to a special folder that does not display previews or content details. Even if a new message arrives, the user only receives a generic notification, without the contact's name or the text sent. To access the chat, it is mandatory to pass the security method configured previously. WhatsApp clarifies that this protection only applies to the device where it is activated. That is, if the account is linked to several devices, the restriction must be configured individually on each one.
How to activate the "secret chat mode" step by step
The process to hide a conversation is simple and doesn't require advanced settings. The user must long-press the chat they want to protect, tap the three-dot menu located at the top, and select the "Restrict conversation" option. From there, the application asks to set up or confirm an unlocking method, which can be biometric or through a code.
Once the process is complete, the chat disappears from the main list and is stored in the protected folder. To access it, you need to scroll to the top of the screen or follow the path indicated by the app, and then validate your identity.
This mechanism is particularly useful in situations where other people may answer the phone, whether occasionally or regularly, as happens in family, work, or educational environments.
