Senators respond to Amnesty International regarding their criticisms of the Penal Code

Santo Domingo.– Senators from different blocs responded this Tuesday to the statements of Amnesty International, which described the approval of the new Penal Code of the Dominican Republic as a “backtrack in human rights.” In that sense, the senator for the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC), Ramón Rogelio Genao, considered that the organization does not have "moral quality" to question, specifying that they approved a piece in accordance with the times.

"They are going to keep criticizing, but it was a pending issue that the Congress of the Dominican Republic has already resolved," he specified upon leaving the session of this day.

In the same vein, the representative of San Cristóbal for the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Cristóbal Venerado, expressed himself, noting that the lower house has the right to approve what it considers.

“Este país es nuestro… ¿Por qué ellos no protestan con Estados Unidos? Con todo lo que hace y está haciendo el actual presidente, sin embargo meten sus cucharas aquí. Nosotros somos dominicanos y somos libres”,

sostuvo.
On his part, legislator Santiago Zorrilla, also from the ruling party, suggested that Amnesty International should raise the points of the piece with which it disagrees so that they can be agreed upon, although he endorsed the statements of his colleagues.
