Paraguay. – A group of 16 migrants deported from the United States was received this Thursday in Paraguayan territory, including Dominican citizens, according to authorities.
The National Directorate of Migrations reported that all those transferred are of legal age and will remain under a temporary stay regime while their individual cases are evaluated in accordance with current regulations.
The transfer is part of the "safe third country" agreement signed between both nations, a mechanism that allows channeling asylum requests outside of US territory, transferring migrants to countries that agree to process said petitions.
The Director of Migrations, Jorge Kronawetter, explained that in addition to Dominicans, the group includes citizens from Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, El Salvador and Spain, which demonstrates the multinational character of the migratory flow attended under this scheme.
Paraguayan authorities indicated that the migrants will be assisted in accordance with humanitarian protocols, guaranteeing basic conditions during their stay in the country, while their legal situation is defined.
