More than 25 organizations call for a popular march in SFM against Barrick Gold

San Francisco de Macorís.- Popular organizations ratified this Wednesday their call for a march this Sunday, June 8th, at 9:00 in the morning, in rejection of multiple problems affecting the communities of the northeast of the country.

The mobilization, which will start from Libertad Avenue with Duarte, has as its main axes the rejection of the construction of a new tailings dam by the mining company Barrick Gold in Cotuí, the denunciation of police abuses and agents of DIGESETT, as well as the opposition to the merger of the Dominican Agrarian Institute (IAD) with the Ministry of Agriculture.

Furthermore, they demanded street paving for marginalized sectors of San Francisco de Macorís and called on communities throughout the northeast region to join, pointing out that if said dam were to be built, the effects would be devastating for agriculture, fishing, and the health of thousands of people due to the contamination of the Yuna River.
