Spain approves extradition of Joel Ambiorix Pimentel "La Jota"

Santo Domingo.– Spanish authorities granted the extradition of Joel Ambiorix Pimentel García, alias “La Jota”, who is wanted in the Dominican Republic for his alleged involvement in two murders and other criminal acts.

The decision was adopted by the Council of Ministers of Spain, which authorized the continuation of the extradition process despite the fact that Pimentel García fled after his provisional detention measure was changed, while the request presented by the Dominican State was being considered.

The Fourth Section of the Criminal Chamber of the National Court approved the extradition so that Pimentel faces Dominican justice for his connection to the deaths of Alejandro Vidal and Gregorio Matos Carrasco, who were murdered while they were inmates at the Correction and Rehabilitation Center (CCR) El Pinito, in La Vega.

Dominican authorities maintain that "La Jota" has a criminal record related to extremely serious events, so it is expected that his return to the country will allow progress in pending judicial processes.

Dominican judicial authorities thanked Spain for its international cooperation in combating transnational crime and reiterated their commitment to due process and respect for the fundamental rights of the accused.
