With a box office of $122 million in its first weekend in the United States and Canada, Superman has achieved something that Warner Bros. and DC Studios had been waiting for: to revitalize their cinematic universe with a successful premiere. The film, written and directed by James Gunn, represents the official beginning of a new era for the franchise, now under the joint direction of Gunn and Peter Safran.

Amidst an unstable environment for superhero movies, both DC and Marvel have had ups and downs, but DC was taking the brunt of it. Productions like The Flash, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and Joker: Folie à Deux did not meet commercial expectations. This release of Superman is presented, then, as a positive sign and a boost to regain the public's trust.

The film is not only significant for its box office performance, but also for what it represents within the new creative direction that Gunn and Safran have charted for DC Studios. It is the first feature film produced entirely under their leadership, and its success could be key to the future of DC's renewed superhero universe.

Although Gunn came from succeeding with Guardians of the Galaxy at Marvel, his irreverent and alternative style generated uncertainty about whether he could transfer that success to a franchise with the iconic weight of Superman. However, his version of the character has been well received, achieving a balance between the classic and the modern that has connected with the audience. The film had an estimated budget of $225 million and, despite facing strong competition at the box office, managed to become the biggest premiere of the year so far in North America, and the first from DC to surpass $100 million in its debut since *Wonder Woman* in 2017. Internationally, the results were more moderate. In 78 markets, Superman grossed approximately 95 million dollars. In China, one of the most important territories for the global box office, the film barely managed 6.6 million, suggesting that the domestic success was not replicated with equal intensity outside the United States. Direct competition was no less. Jurassic World Rebirth, the most-watched film the previous week, dropped to second place with 40 million dollars. Other films like F1: The Movie and How to Train Your Dragon also held prominent positions at the box office, but none managed to get close to the power of Superman in its debut.

These figures consolidate Superman as the third-largest premiere of 2025, an encouraging sign for Warner Bros., which seeks to rebuild its cinematic universe with a long-term strategy. The intention is to establish a coherent and attractive narrative that can compete with the MCU, and this result could be the first step in that direction.

The commercial performance of Superman also demonstrates that, despite the wear and tear of the superhero genre, there is still an audience willing to return to theaters if the stories are engaging and the characters are well-developed. With a renewed focus and a solid visual proposal, the film manages to bring freshness to a character already known by generations. Now, DC Studios faces the challenge of maintaining this momentum. The success of Superman raises expectations for upcoming projects within the DC universe, and tests James Gunn's vision as the leader of this new era. If he manages to sustain the narrative and technical quality, he could be building a new golden age for superheroes in cinema.
