At least ten people have died and several were injured this Tuesday after a bus was hit by a landslide in the state of Himachal Pradesh, in northern India, following an episode of heavy rains in the area.

"Ten deaths have been reported so far and rescue operations are continuing," said a deputy commissioner of the district, Om Kant, quoted by the local ANI agency.

The detachment occurred when a mass of mud and rocks fell on the vehicle while it was traveling on a mountain road, according to initial reports from local authorities, he added.

The head of the state government expressed his "deep dismay" at the event and assured that emergency teams are deployed in the area for rescue and care of the injured.

This new accident occurs in a late monsoon season, when heavy rains cause frequent landslides and river floods in the north of the country. Authorities warn every year of the risk of traveling on mountain roads during this time, due to the saturation of the terrain and the instability of the slopes.

The event also occurs a few days after the tragedies recorded in Nepal and other regions of northern India, where almost fifty people lost their lives and dozens are still missing due to torrential rains and landslides that have affected extensive rural areas.
