Beijing.- A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook eastern Taiwan this Wednesday, with its epicenter in Taitung County, with no casualties or significant damage reported so far, according to data from the Central Meteorological Center of the island (CWA).
The earthquake occurred at 5:47 p.m. local time (09:47 GMT) and had its epicenter at 22.85 degrees north latitude and 121.15 degrees east longitude, about 10 kilometers north of the Taitung County Government building. The hypocenter was located at a depth of 11.9 kilometers, according to the official report. This same region was the scene of a 7.2 magnitude earthquake in April of last year that caused 18 deaths, more than 1,100 injuries and millionaire losses for the local economy. Taiwan sits at the confluence of the Philippine and Eurasian plates, so earthquakes are frequent in this territory.
