Miami.- US President Donald Trump tasked his Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, this Thursday with getting Miami to be the venue for the World Expo 2035 (World's Fair), which would bring this world fair back to the United States after more than 50 years.

"I am announcing the intention of the United States to compete for the World Expo 2035. The great state of Florida has expressed a strong interest in hosting the expo in Miami, which I fully support. Miami Expo 2035 can be the next great milestone in our golden age of the United States," he wrote on Truth Social.

The president announced the appointment of Rubio, originally from Miami, to "lead the efforts to coordinate and advance this exciting opportunity".

If the bid is successful, it would be the first World's Fair of the 21st century in the United States, a country that hosted one for the first time in 1876, in Philadelphia, and for the last time in 1984, in New Orleans, when it received 7.35 million visitors from 15 countries, according to data from the State Department. Osaka (Japan), in 2025, and Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), in 2030, are the most recent venues for these exhibitions, defined as 'a global gathering of nations dedicated to finding solutions to the most pressing challenges of today', which usually attract investment, business, and tourism to the host cities.

"We will create thousands of jobs and add billions of dollars in growth to our economy," Trump promised.

The leader framed the event, whose first edition was in London in 1851, as one of those that has most promoted, like the 2026 World Cup, the 2028 Olympics and the G7 Summit in 2027. The president, who moved his official residence to Florida in his first term, promoted events in Miami, such as the G20 Summit at his Doral golf club next December and the construction of a presidential library in the city center. "I hope to win and participate in the Miami Expo 2035!" he concluded. The host city is chosen by vote in the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), where Riyadh defeated the other two candidates, South Korea's Busan and Rome, in 2023.
