Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of colon cancer

A recent study warns that excessive alcohol consumption throughout life is associated with a higher risk of developing colon and rectal cancer. The research, conducted with more than 88,000 adults, determined that people who consume an average of 14 or more alcoholic beverages per week for long periods have a significantly higher risk of colorectal cancer, compared to those who consume less than one drink per week. In the case of rectal cancer, the risk can be almost double. The data also indicates that maintaining a high and constant consumption during adulthood further increases the chances of developing this disease. Conversely, those who reduce or stop alcohol consumption have a lower probability of developing precancerous polyps in the colon. Researchers explain that this increased risk could be related to substances generated during alcohol metabolism in the intestine, as well as alterations in the intestinal flora.
