What makes it safer? The RD electronic passport will have 130 protection measures

Santo Domingo.- The General Directorate of Passports (DGP) presented the main features of the new Dominican electronic passport, a document that incorporates 130 security measures and complies with the highest international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

Among its main innovations, the inclusion of a polycarbonate data sheet stands out, a highly durable and resistant plastic material, which integrates an encrypted chip where the biographical, demographic, and biometric data of the citizen are securely stored. Daniel Lozano, in charge of the new electronic passport, highlighted this Wednesday in a meeting with opinion leaders that the passport has cryptographic verification, which will allow its authenticity to be validated immediately at international border controls, thus reinforcing the trust and security of the Dominican document.

The document incorporates multiple physical and visual protection elements such as holograms, microtexts, Taíno symbols, and laser engraving, in addition to cultural and heritage references of the country. Another relevant aspect of the process is the automatic integration of data from the Junta Central Electoral (JCE), which ensures that the information contained in the passport is accurate, reliable, and issued directly by the entity responsible for civil registration, with no possibility of alterations during the issuance process.

These features make the passport much more difficult to forge and reinforce the authenticity of the document in national and international migration controls.

Among the technological innovations, the electronic passport includes fingerprint, facial features, and encrypted signature, as well as advanced cryptographic verification systems, allowing for immediate electronic validation. It also offers high resistance to water, heat, and wear, ensuring a longer lifespan of the document and advanced protection against identity theft.

Temperature, Humidity, and Heat Tests

As part of the modernization project of the Dominican passport, authorities from the General Directorate of Passports visited the factories in Colombia where the new electronic passport is produced, an experience they described as highly satisfactory after verifying the strict quality controls to which the document is subjected. As explained, the passports undergo tests of temperature, humidity, and heat, demonstrating high resistance thanks to the data sheet in polycarbonate, a material that guarantees durability and significantly hinders any attempt at falsification.

Types of Passports

Regarding passport types, Lozano explained that they will be issued in the modalities of diplomatic, official, and regular, each with specific colors and details on its cover. The regular passport will maintain the generic designation, while diplomatic and official passports will be clearly identified. Likewise, all electronic passports will include on their cover the international chip symbol, which allows for visual identification that it is an electronic document. Among the additional security measures are gold-colored stamps, the map of the Dominican Republic, laser-perforated numbering, invisible engravings perceptible under certain light conditions and high-relief designs, elements that reinforce the authenticity of the document and make its illegal reproduction difficult. With this modernization, the Dominican Republic takes a firm step towards the digital transformation of its identity documents, strengthening citizen security and projecting an image of greater trust and modernity before the international community.
