Santo Domingo.– The President of the Republic, Luis Abinader, warned that the Government is willing to go to court if the company Vinci Airports, through Aeropuertos Dominicanos Siglo XXI (Aerodom), does not begin the construction of the new terminal of the Las Américas International Airport (AILA), as established in the concession contract. During a meeting with opinion leaders, the president expressed his dissatisfaction with the lack of visible progress on the project, despite the fact that the first groundbreaking of the work was carried out in August 2025 along with executives from the French company.

“If they don't comply with what was agreed, we are willing to go to court,” he stated.

Abinader explained that the renewal of the operation contract for Dominican airports was granted to Vinci Airports with the aim of giving it the time and conditions necessary to execute the agreed improvements, including the construction of the new AILA terminal. However, he pointed out that, despite multiple conversations, the company has not met the established deadlines.

In that same vein, he recalled that last December the Minister of Tourism, David Collado, publicly urged Aerodom to start the work and catch up, as other air terminals in the country have done.

Aerodom's Response

Faced with the indications, the spokesperson for Aerodom, Luis José López, assured that the project is progressing according to the schedule and in compliance with the concession contract. He explained that a work of this magnitude contemplates preparatory and technical phases that, although not always visible on the ground, are essential to guarantee an efficient and uninterrupted construction.

López reiterated that the company maintains a constant dialogue with the authorities and guaranteed that the new terminal will be delivered within the established timeframe. Likewise, he indicated that no recent complaints have been received regarding parking and that the issue of the five million dollar fine is still under discussion with the Airport Commission.

Santo Domingo Monorail

During the meeting, President Abinader also referred to the technical study of the Santo Domingo Monorail, whose estimated cost ranges between 800 and 900 million dollars. He acknowledged that the work would not be completed during his administration, but affirmed that it is a strategic project that will remain as a legacy in favor of the country's development.
