Washington.- The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, said this Wednesday that "no country should invade another," when asked if he maintains his position on Venezuela after the meeting with the American president, Donald Trump.

"I believe that in Latin America no country should invade another, ever", Petro pointed out when asked, after his intervention before the Organization of American States (OAS), if his country still condemns the United States' attack on Venezuela on January 3rd, which resulted in the capture of Nicolás Maduro.

On January 6th, Colombia, before the OAS, led the rejection of the "unilateral military action" by the United States in Caracas, with which the capture of the Venezuelan president was executed, who is now detained in a New York prison. Petro's statements, following his intervention, were the only ones referring to the issue of Venezuela and during his presentation, which lasted almost 40 minutes, he used most of the time to question the actions of multilateral organizations in the face of the climate change situation and global conflicts. The Colombian president criticized the OAS's actions in recent years, saying: "Then, in these three years, we did not go towards the laws, we did not go towards the norms built collectively. We went, as I see it, to a greater incapacity, as I see it, the regulations of the Inter-American Human Rights system were changed." Petro did not refer to his meeting on Tuesday with Trump at the White House and before the plenary of nations he only said that he could not refer to the issue of Venezuela if there was no representation of that nation present. The Trump-Petro meeting, which both described as positive, took place a month after Maduro's capture, as well as a tension marked by Trump's direct statements against Petro, to whom he had said he would be "the next" and openly accused of being a drug trafficker. In 2025, Petro lost his U.S. visa, after in New York, during the general assembly of the United Nations, he called on the American armed forces not to obey "illegal orders" and received economic sanctions, which according to the Colombian he did not discuss with Trump during his visit.
