Santo Domingo.- The leader of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD), Abel Martínez,, questioned this Saturday the practice of stopping traffic to allow public officials to pass, considering that this measure should only be applied to the president and vice president for security reasons. Through a video shared on social media, Martinez stated that he does not understand why traffic is stopped and traffic lights are ignored to facilitate the movement of officials, a situation that, according to him, has been repeated in governments of different parties.

The also former mayor of Santiago de los Caballeros pointed out that when he held the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies —fourth in the hierarchical line of the State— he never requested that traffic be stopped for his passage. He also indicated that during his eight years as mayor of Santiago, he did not allow such practices either. Martínez argued that it is understandable that security measures are taken for President Luis Abinader and Vice President Raquel Peña, but he considered that doing so for other officials causes congestion and affects citizens. Finally, he called on the authorities to set an example and correct that practice, with the aim of strengthening respect for the rules and contributing to a better coexistence in the country.
