Trump claims the U.S. is "talking" to Iran

In statements to the press aboard Air Force One, US President Donald Trump, stated this Sunday that Washington is holding talks with Iran.

To a journalist's question about whether his Administration is carrying out any diplomatic contact with the Islamic Republic at the moment, the president replied: "Yes, we are talking to them, but I don't think they are ready [for an agreement], although they are getting quite close".

"I don't know if I want to make a deal. Because, first of all, nobody even knows who you're negotiating with, since most of their leaders have been killed, as you know. So I don't even know if I want to make a deal. They are desperate to make a deal," he declared. Previously, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, stated that Iran has never expressed to Washington its desire to reach an agreement. "We have never asked for a ceasefire, nor have we even asked for negotiations [on the nuclear program]. We are willing to defend ourselves for as long as necessary," he stated in an interview with CBS. He also indicated that Tehran sees "no reason" to return to the negotiating table with Washington due to the unprovoked military actions launched for the second time during the talks process.

Aggression against Iran

  • Israel and USA launched a joint aggression against Iran on the morning of Saturday, February 28, with the declared objective of "eliminating the threats" of the Islamic Republic.
  • The bombings caused the death of the ayatollah Ali Jamenei and several high-ranking military officials. Mojtabá Jamenei, son of the deceased Iranian supreme leader, was elected as his successor.
  • In response to the offensive, Tehran has launched numerous waves of ballistic missiles and drones against Israel and against US bases in Middle Eastern countries.
  • Likewise, it almost completely blocked the Strait of Hormuz, a maritime route through which around 20% of all the oil traded in the world circulates. The situation has driven up crude oil prices.
  • The new supreme leader addressed the nation for the first time since his appointment, through a message in which he promises to avenge each of the deaths suffered by the Iranian people. In addition, he described as "fundamental" to continue blocking the Strait of Hormuz, while asserting that opening other fronts is being considered "where the enemy has little experience and will be extremely vulnerable".
  • Meanwhile, Washington continues to claim that it is winning the conflict and that the offensive will end "very soon", as "there is nothing left to attack". For its part, the Iranian Armed Forces reported more than 50 waves of attacks against the perpetrators of the aggression.
