World Digital Learning Day

March 19th is World Digital Learning Day, a date officially proclaimed by UNESCO at its 42nd meeting on November 20, 2023. This date was celebrated for the first time in 2024.

The United Nations and UNESCO consider digital innovation in education to be important. New technologies are seen as a social necessity to guarantee the human right to education, especially in a world that increasingly frequently has to deal with crises and conflicts. In the pandemic, it was the countries with less digital infrastructure and digital learning systems that suffered the greatest educational disruptions. This crisis highlighted the importance of integrating technologies to transform educational models, build inclusive and resilient systems, and improve access to educational opportunities. Therefore, from then on, work began on digital literacy, especially among teachers and students, and extending it to the entire educational community and society in general.

Digital Learning Day in 2026

International Digital Learning Day 2026, has the motto "Forging digital futures for public education", highlighting the need to create and strengthen accessible and reliable digital spaces and resources to support education.

Currently, in many contexts, students, teachers, and families lack clear references where to find quality digital tools. Faced with this challenge, more and more educational systems are investing in the development of digital environments that complement traditional teaching. The initiative invites to make visible how different countries are building digital common goods to improve public education. In this framework, UNESCO, together with UNICEF and ITU, will launch a charter with guidelines for the design and management of public digital learning platforms, reinforcing the commitment to effectively integrate digital with face-to-face educational spaces. What is digital learning? Digital learning refers to the process of acquiring knowledge, skills, and competencies using digital technologies. This educational approach leverages digital tools and resources, such as computers, mobile devices, educational software, online platforms, and cloud resources, to facilitate teaching and learning. Digital learning offers flexibility in terms of access to educational content and the possibility of adapting the study pace according to individual needs. In addition, it can facilitate the active participation of the student, encourage online collaboration, and provide instant feedback. UNESCO adopts a humanist approach where technologies serve people and are designed for this purpose.
