Santiago.- The defense of the three defendants for the altercation in which an agent of the General Directorate of Traffic and Ground Transportation Security (Digesett) was injured in the vicinity of the Cibao International Airport, described asexcessive” the coercion measure imposed this Wednesday and announced that it will appeal the court's decision. Lawyer Roberto Pérez, legal representative of the defendants, considered that the legal qualification adopted by the judge was disproportionate, so he assured that they will appeal the resolution, understanding that "the measure" taken against their clients "was not fair." The measure was imposed by Judge José Rafael de Asís Burgos, coordinator of the Instruction Courts of the judicial district of Santiago, who ordered three months of preventive detention against Franmy Gutiérrez Feliz, Darleny Lisbet Rodríguez Rodríguez and Joss Antonio Gutiérrez Feliz. The accused must serve their coercion in the Rafey Men's and Rafey Women's correction and rehabilitation centers, as appropriate.

Digesett: “A clear message must be sent to society”

From his side, Valentín Oviedo, legal consultant for Digesett, valued the court's decision and maintained that this process should serve as an example for Dominican society, considering that aggressions against members of an institution in charge of enforcing traffic laws cannot be tolerated.

Oviedo stated that, although everyone has the right to defense, the facts must be considered responsibly, as the agents were acting in the exercise of their duties, in a task of inspection and enabling of transit. "We must send a message to Dominican society that laws must be respected. Agents are called upon to enforce a traffic regulation, prevent accidents and preserve order, so a situation like this cannot be seen as normal," said the legal representative of the institution. He added that the members of Digesett represent a public authority and that any aggression against them while fulfilling their duty must have exemplary consequences, to strengthen respect for the rules and institutions of the State.

The Origin of the Incident

The case originated during an inspection for illegal parking at the airport terminal, a situation that led to a brawl between Digesett agents and the now-accused. The incident caused a great stir after several videos circulated on social media, showing part of the altercation that occurred at the Cibao International Airport. With the decision already issued, the case now enters a new judicial stage, marked by the defense's announcement that they will appeal the pre-trial detention, while the plaintiff insists that the process should become a firm signal of respect for authority and compliance with the law.
