Basallo decides in extra innings and Orioles prevail in dramatic duel against Royals

States um

United States. Dominican Samuel Basallo was the key figure in a night of high drama, guiding the Baltimore Orioles to a 7-5 victory in 12 innings over the Kansas City Royals at Kauffman Stadium.

Basallo tied the game in the ninth inning with a run-scoring single on a two-strike, two-out count, and responded again in the twelfth inning with another hit that gave Baltimore the lead again. The final blow came shortly after, when Dominican Leody Taveras hit a grand slam against reliever Alex Lange, sealing the victory in one of the most exciting games of the day. The hit became the second latest grand slam in franchise history, only behind the one hit by Pedro Álvarez in the 14th inning in 2018. The duel was dominated for the most part by Kansas City's pitching. Starter Seth Lugo limited Baltimore to just one hit in seven solid innings, keeping the opposing offense at bay. However, Orioles' opener Kyle Bradish also showed character by holding firm despite allowing multiple runners on base. The right-hander worked 5.1 innings in which he allowed 10 hits and three walks, but conceded only one run, the result of a home run by Jac Caglianone. The Baltimore bullpen — made up of Rico García, Grant Wolfram, Yennier Cano, and Ryan Helsley — kept the game within reach, despite the constant pressure from the Royals, who left 15 runners on base. Baltimore's offensive reaction came late, but it was timely. After two walks in the ninth inning, Basallo hit the single that tied the score, starting the comeback that culminated in extra innings. With this victory, the Orioles continue to fight to improve their record in a season that already has several games decided in extra innings.
