Court to hear petition for new expert opinion requested by Espaillat siblings

SANTO DOMINGO. – The Third Instruction Court of the National District will hear this Monday the petition of the brothers Antonio and Maribel Espaillat, who seek a new expert assessment of the Jet Set tragedy. According to Yan Carlos Martínez, lawyer for the victims, the Espaillat's request aims to hinder the judicial process and construct a version of the case favorable to the defendants, attempting to generate "evidence" that diminishes their responsibility. Martínez stated that he expects the request to be rejected, as he believes that a new expert would respond to the interests of the accused.

The brothers propose that engineer José M. Lockhart be in charge of the new expert assessment. However, the authorities have already carried out an expert assessment that served as the basis for the accusatory file, and the accused seek to modify it in their favor. The court will have the final say on the matter. As a coercive measure, Antonio and Maribel Espaillat were ordered to pay 50 million pesos each to avoid preventive detention, as requested by the Public Ministry. The tragedy of the Jet Set, which occurred on April 8, left 236 dead and hundreds injured, marking an episode of great mourning in the historical memory of the country and a case that continues to generate judicial and social repercussions.
