• 1537: in Rome, Pope Paul III publishes the bull Sublimis Deus, where he decrees that the indigenous Americans are true human beings, endowed with a soul.
• 1782: in Madrid, the Banco de San Carlos, the future Banco de España, is established.
• 1875: Scottish inventor Alexander Graham Bell invents a membrane microphone for his telephone.
• 1884: in Buenos Aires (Argentina), the Volunteer Fire Department of La Boca, the oldest in that country, is founded.
• 1896: in Great Britain, Guglielmo Marconi patents the radio.
• 1909: the first airplane flight with passengers takes place.
