The international entertainment world is in mourning following the death of Nicholas Brendon, the 54-year-old
American actor primarily remembered for his role as Xander Harris in all seven seasons of the acclaimed series
Buffy the Vampire Slayer. According to a statement released by the actor's family on his Instagram account, his passing occurred this Friday, March 20, while he was asleep and was due to natural causes.
In the text, his loved ones expressed their deep sorrow at the loss: "We are heartbroken to share the passing of our brother and son, Nicholas Brendon. He passed away in his sleep from natural causes." The family also highlighted the artistic facet that the actor developed in his later years, where they noted that he had found in painting a genuine means of expression. "Nicky was passionate, sensitive and tirelessly motivated to create. Those who truly knew him understood that his art was one of the purest reflections of who he really was," they added in the letter.
Brendon's career was marked by the global popularity he achieved after being selected in 1997 to play Xander Harris in the series created by Joss Whedon. His character, a young man without supernatural abilities who accompanied the protagonist in her fight against evil, helped redefine the "nerd" archetype in American popular culture. In an interview given to
The Hollywood Reporter in 2017, during the twentieth anniversary of the program, the actor reflected on the impact of his work: "There are many men who tell me: 'You made me look cool being a nerd, clumsy and funny.' I wonder how many babies are out there because Xander helped people be more confident in high school."
Born in Los Angeles in 1971 as Nicholas Brendon Schultz, he also stood out for his commitment to social causes. During the rise of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, he used his own personal experience to fight against stuttering, becoming a key spokesperson for the Stuttering Foundation of America. In addition to his success on television, Brendon participated in other well-known productions such as the comedy Psycho Beach Party and had a recurring role in the series Criminal Minds between 2007 and 2014.
However, his life was marked by significant personal challenges, as he, on more than one occasion, was open about his mental health problems and substance abuse, situations that led him to face multiple legal proceedings starting in 2010. In recent years, his physical health also deteriorated: in 2023 he revealed that he suffered a heart attack and that he suffered from a congenital heart condition, in addition to suffering from cauda equina syndrome, a neurological pathology that required several spinal surgeries. Nevertheless, at the time of his death, his family assured that he was under medical treatment and with an optimistic attitude about his future.
Nicholas Brendon's Tribute to Buffy the Vampire Slayer
The actor wasn't very active on social media, so one of his last posts was on May 20, 2023, where he celebrated the 20th anniversary of the end of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. With an image that moved more than one person, his colleagues Michelle Trachtenberg - who died on February 26, 2025 -, Sarah Michelle Prinze, Eliza Dushku and Alyson Hannigan could be seen.
"I still meet people almost every day who were fans of the series, and sometimes it seems like we just finished filming, and not that two decades have passed. It's wonderful to be here. It's exciting!" Nicholas began by expressing.
Then, he assured: “I love that so many of you connected with the series and the characters. And despite some bittersweet memories, I will always be very grateful for having had the opportunity to play Xander and for having met so many of you. You are a lovely audience!”. Thus, he made sure to make it clear how happy he was during his work on the successful production.
To conclude, he left a text that today, after his passing was announced, generates commotion: "Thank you for keeping a special place in your hearts for the series all these years. I am as much a fan as you are and I miss it as much as I miss filming it. I don't want the show to end."
