During the night of Wednesday and early hours of this Thursday, a long series of blackouts hit several sectors of greater Santo Domingo, at a time of year when the highest temperatures are being recorded, situations that combined lengthen the nights of many citizens.

Power outages intensified yesterday in sectors such as Villa Juana, in the National District, on the San Isidro Highway, in Santo Domingo East, and in neighborhoods and residential areas of the Duarte Highway, in Santo Domingo West.

The same situation is experienced in popular sectors of the city of Santiago, such as in the Municipal District of Hato del Yaque, Villa Liberación de la otra Banda, Hato Mayor and Pekín, as confirmed by De Último Minuto through its correspondent in the north zone, Inocencio Encarnación.

The Unified Council of Distribution Companies (CUED) has scheduled a press conference for this Thursday at 10:00 a.m., where they are expected to provide an explanation and announce possible solutions to the difficult energy situation the country is going through.

The CUED had reported on Wednesday the shutdown of the Punta Catalina II electricity generating unit due to a technical issue.

They said they are working to overcome the energy deficit resulting from that situation, but they did not provide further details or an estimated time for when it would be resolved.

Also on Wednesday, the national electrical system recorded the instantaneous maximum demand served of 3,923 megawatts (MW), as reported by the Minister of Energy and Mines, Joel Santos.

The highest level of renewable generation, 1,554 MW, was also recorded, a milestone that reflects the sustained growth and diversification of the Dominican Republic's energy matrix.
