Chicken price plummets due to low demand and overproduction

Santiago.- The price of chicken continues to decline in the markets and poultry shops of the city due to low demand and excess production, a situation that worries merchants, who claim that, although the product is cheaper, sales remain practically paralyzed due to the lack of circulating money. Nuria María Sánchez, owner of the chicken shop “La Rubia”, explained that in December the pound of chicken was sold for up to 85 pesos due to the increase in year-end consumption, but currently the price has fallen between 10 and 20 pesos. "Now it was that it began to go down. Outside the companies it has gone down to 20 pesos. There is too much chicken and sales are slow because there is no money on the street," said Sanchez.

The merchant also assured that the reduction in sales is around 50%, directly affecting businesses in the poultry sector. In Goyo's skirt, the employee Marco Pie indicated that the pound is currently sold at 75 pesos, but the movement of customers remains minimal despite the discount. "There's a lot of merchandise, but few people buying. Chicken has been going down for more than a week and we believe it will continue to go down," he expressed.

Pie added that just a month ago the product maintained high prices, although now each establishment sets different costs to attract buyers. Meanwhile, consumers are starting to notice the relief in their pockets. Damian Arias, a buyer of white meat, valued the price reduction and described chicken as "more affordable and much better" for families. The drop in the price of chicken reflects a saturated market and weakened consumption, amid the economic difficulties faced by both merchants and buyers.
