Santo Domingo.– Conflicting opinions have arisen following the statements of the Minister of Environment, Paíno Henríquez, regarding the possible impact of 0.01% of the Dr. Rafael M. Moscoso Botanical Garden as part of the expansion project of the República de Colombia avenue. Most of the interviewed citizens expressed their disagreement with the proposal and believe that it should be thoroughly analyzed before implementing any intervention that alters the current limits of the park.

"El asunto es resolver el problema en las esquinas, en las intersecciones. Si estas no fluyen, es que se arma el tapón. Es incorrecto tomar parte del Botánico",

opinó Pedro Delano.

For his part, Emilio, a civil engineer, commented that "We live in a metropolis and continuous work must be done to make transit viable. One should not wait to reach these extremes to act. I am against it, but taking a piece away from the Botanical Garden is not the solution".

Similarly, Harold, one of the citizens and park users consulted by this media outlet, stated that the proposal should be better studied and consider other alternatives.

"Me parece una propuesta que no cuenta con el sentir de la gente ni con la participación ciudadana. Es algo arbitrario por parte del gobierno. Deberían tomar en cuenta primero la opinión del pueblo, ya que el Jardín Botánico es un patrimonio dominicano, no del gobierno de turno",

señaló.

However, there were also voices in favor of the initiative.

"I agree, as long as it's for the benefit of transportation. They will find a way to leave things in place. But it is important that they expand the Republic of Colombia," said Joel Familia.

These statements were made after the announcement by President Luis Abinader, who informed that this Wednesday the formal announcement by the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) is scheduled, where the details of the road infrastructure project that seeks to solve the continuous traffic jams and vehicular chaos during rush hour on the República de Colombia avenue will be announced.
