A new study has identified an association between the presence of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in childhood and a higher risk of developing physical health problems in middle age.
The research analyzed data from almost 11,000 people followed for several decades. The results indicate that those who presented ADHD traits at age 10 are more likely to suffer from two or more chronic diseases in adulthood, as well as experience functional limitations in their daily lives.
Among the most frequent health problems are respiratory conditions, migraines, back pain, neurological disorders, metabolic diseases and other chronic conditions. The study also indicates a higher incidence of disability related to physical health in middle age.
