Buenos Aires.- The American appliance manufacturer Whirlpool decided to close its plant in Argentina and lay off 220 workers, sources from the company confirmed to EFE this Wednesday. The company notified its employees of the closure of its plant in the Buenos Aires town of Pilar, an establishment that it had inaugurated in 2022 after investing 50 million dollars. The multinational produced washing machines there, partly for export. The company, which with this decision ceases to produce in Argentina, will continue to market its imported products in the South American country from other markets.

The company adopted this measure after a year marked by the opening of imports in Argentina, where consumption has not yet recovered.

"Several factors converged in the making of this decision, some of them internal, but also some external ones. We made significant efforts to reduce costs and implemented improvements in processes to be more competitive against imported products, to which the drop in consumption is added," sources from the company explained.

It was pointed out that, after analyzing these variables, they decided to take this step to "redefine" their "regional supply chain footprint with the need to strengthen competitiveness in an increasingly challenging environment."
