The Wikimedia Foundation, responsible for Wikipedia, announced the signing of strategic alliances with the technology companies Amazon, Meta and Microsoft. The agreement will allow these companies to access the content of the encyclopedia to develop and train artificial intelligence systems in a formal and sustainable way. Through the Wikipedia Enterprise platform, the commercial version of Wikipedia, companies will have access to structured information that has historically been used massively by AI models, generating pressure on the servers of the non-profit organization. The initiative seeks to ensure the sustainability of Wikipedia and ensure that companies that benefit from the content contribute to the maintenance of the platform. Wikipedia co-founder Jimmy Wales highlighted that the collaboration will balance free access for users and commercial use by large corporations, promoting a model that respects both open access and the financial sustainability of the encyclopedia.
