Tokisha denounces being a victim of classism in the Dominican Republic: “They won't let me move into any building in this country”

Santo Domingo.- The Dominican urban music interpreter Tokisha Altagracia Peralta, better known in the artistic world as Tokisha, gave an exclusive interview tonight on “Alofoke Radio Show”, where she surprised with strong statements by claiming to be a “victim of classism”.

According to the singer's statements, she has tried on more than one occasion to acquire or rent properties in Santo Domingo; however, the members of neighborhood associations have rejected her request, alleging that her behavior in the artistic field could harm peaceful coexistence.

“Outside of art, outside of music, everything I experience here is horrible classism, I am going through a difficult situation. They won't let me move into any building in this country,” the singer expressed.

Tokisha revealed that as a consequence of the mistreatment she has received at the hands of those who make up the associations and neighborhood boards, she had to start looking for an apartment in the city of New York, given that she was rejected in most condominiums where she chose to rent or buy, assuring that she does not want to leave the Dominican Republic because she is happy living in her country.

“I don't want to move from here, I want to live here, I like living here, I travel a lot but I like to arrive here at my house in DR,” expressed Tokisha.

The interpreter of “Piscis”, revealed that at this moment she is in a remodeling process in her own apartment and therefore chose to look for another option to live with her partner, who is a foreigner.

In her statements, Tokisha expressed that both she and her partner were vetted by the owners of a luxury property located in the prestigious Bella Vista area of Santo Domingo and were chosen by the owner to formalize the purchase, however, the members of the condominium's neighborhood association opposed this happening.

“I found a beautiful apartment in a tower in Bella Vista, a penthouse with a terrace; spacious rooms, beautiful, they were selling it, my partner and I wanted to buy it, we sent all the paperwork, they registered us and the owner accepted us, when the time came for the neighbors' meeting to accept me, they denied me entry and it has happened to me 4 times, they always say that they cannot accept me in their building, that it is a family building,” added Tokisha.

Visibly disappointed, she shared that this is something that happens frequently in her life, as many believe that the character from music and social media is the one who is going to live with them as a neighbor, assuring that in each bad experience she feels a victim of classism and racism, as only women and a girl live in her home.

“I live with my niece and my sister and my cats and my little dog and the housekeeper who lives with us, we are women, I don't drink alcohol, I don't smoke, I don't throw parties at my house, I get home from work, I travel a lot, the most I can be at home is two weeks, it's difficult,” she said.
