San Juan. — Amid a worrying wave of femicides, which already totals 11 cases so far in 2025, Governor Jenniffer González ruled out declaring a new state of emergency for gender violence, a measure that expired in December after being implemented by the previous administration.

He emphasized that his focus will be on emotional education from public schools.

González argued that the new emotional management curriculum, already in the process of implementation by the Department of Education, is a key tool to prevent violence from an early age.

“Una vida es demasiado, aunque las estadísticas bajen. Este programa les dará a los estudiantes recursos para canalizar sus emociones y evitar actos violentos”,

expresó González.
Instead of reactivating the emergency order, the governor assured that she prefers to redirect resources towards prevention campaigns, guidance, direct support to victims, and more care centers, in coordination with the Office of the Women's Advocate and the Department of Justice.

“Queremos romper los patrones de conducta desde la raíz. Apostamos a la prevención con herramientas reales”,

dijo González.

Three femicides in less than a month

The announcement comes as the country faces an alarming spate of femicides, with three cases recorded in just three weeks. The most recent occurred on Monday, when Keitshalys Rodríguez Figueroa, 18, was murdered by her partner, Jorge Daniel Arman Cordero, 20, who then took his own life. According to reports, the young man warned a friend that "something was going to happen" before the crime. Days earlier, on June 17, Ramona Umpierre Vázquez was murdered by her husband, Antonio Pabón Morales, 51 years old, who also injured their son in the attack. The aggressor, allegedly with mental conditions, later died of a seizure. Another case that shook the island was that of Linda Ledee Díaz, 29 years old, murdered by her partner of nine months, Emmanuel Colón Díaz, in front of a municipal post office in Carolina. He also committed suicide at the scene.

At […]
