ATLANTA – Phillies slugger, Kyle Schwarber, was the absolute protagonist of the 95th All-Star Game by shining in the new “Decisive Derby” format and giving the victory to the National League over the American League. Thanks to his historic performance of three home runs in three swings, Schwarber was named Most Valuable Player of the All-Star Game Ted Williams, presented by Chevrolet.

After the American team tied the game 6-6 with a comeback in the ninth inning, the result was decided by a special round of home runs between three batters per team. Schwarber was in charge of tipping the scales with blasts of 428, 461 and 382 feet, thus surpassing his opponents."It was incredible. The guys were really excited, cheering on every swing. When the last home run crossed the fence, everyone was euphoric. It was a lot of fun," said Schwarber.
The swing-off, for the first time in action
This “decisive derby” was implemented in the new collective agreement, but it had not been necessary until now. Managers Aaron Boone (American League) and Dave Roberts (National League) chose their representatives for the final competition:- National League (4 HR):
- Kyle Stowers: 1
- Kyle Schwarber: 3
- Pete Alonso: his turn was not necessary
- American League (3 HR):
- Brent Rooker: 2
- Randy Arozarena: 1
- Jonathan Aranda: 0
Second MVP for a Phillies player since 1964
Schwarber found out just on Monday that he could be part of the swing-off. Without hesitation, he accepted the challenge. "They told me that Roberts wanted me for that and I said: 'Of course'. Although you never think you're really going to need it," he confessed. Thus, the left-handed slugger joins Johnny Callison (1964) as the only Phillies players to receive this award since its inception in 1962.The key, according to Schwarber, was the connection with Dino Ebel, Dodgers' third base coach, who threw him the balls. “Dino threw me perfect batting practice. I knew him since the World Classic, so there was good chemistry”, he explained.
