Bangkok.- A 6.3 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian region of Papua this Tuesday, in the eastern part of the Southeast Asian archipelago, with no tsunami alert.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records seismic activity worldwide, located the earthquake's hypocenter at a depth of 10 kilometers and at a distance of about 193 kilometers northwest of Jayapura, the largest city in the Indonesian region of Papua.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said on its website that there is no tsunami alert or threat.

The island of New Guinea, whose western half belongs to Indonesia and the eastern half to Papua New Guinea, sits on the «Pacific Ring of Fire», an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken each year by about 7,000 tremors, most of them moderate.
