Red Sox release Walker Buehler amid roster moves

Boston. — The Boston Red Sox announced this Friday a series of roster moves that included the release of right-handed pitcher Walker Buehler, who had arrived at the organization as one of the bets of the offseason.

Buehler, 31, signed a one-year contract for US$21.05 million with Boston, with a mutual option for 2026. However, he failed to meet expectations: in 23 appearances (22 starts), he posted a 7-7 record and a 5.45 ERA, numbers far from those that made him a two-time All-Star and World Series champion with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The veteran's difficulties were also reflected in his peripheral statistics, with the worst records of his career in strikeouts per nine innings (6.7) and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of just 1.53. His inconsistency led the coaching staff to recently move him to the bullpen, before the club decided to dispense with his services.

Youth in command

In contrast, Boston took advantage of the day to give way to youth. The club promoted pitching prospect Payton Tolle, who will make his debut in the Major Leagues, considered one of the arms with the greatest projection in the organization. Also, the Red Sox called up infielder/outfielder Nick Sogard from Triple-A Worcester and sent Venezuelan Jhostynxon García to that same affiliate.

An Unexpected Twist

Buehler's departure marks an abrupt turn in the Red Sox's strategy, who were expecting to count on the right-hander as a key piece of their rotation in 2025. His poor performance forced management to rethink the plan, while the organization bets on new blood to stay competitive in the final stretch of the campaign.
