Arrival of first Amazon Air flight makes the Dominican Republic a Caribbean logistics hub

Santo Domingo. – The Dominican Republic received this Wednesday, September 3, the first cargo flight of Amazon Air at Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez, thus marking the beginning of direct operations of the world's leading e-commerce and logistics company in the country.

The event was led by the Director General of Customs, Eduardo “Yayo” Sanz Lovatón, and the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Mipymes, Víctor “Ito” Bisonó, who agreed that this operation represents a historic step for the national economy.

Sanz Lovatón highlighted the impact that Amazon Air will have on the country's positioning as a regional hub.

"We welcome you to the Dominican Republic, which begins today its operation of bringing cargo with seven flights a week planned, and this is a further demonstration that the Dominican Republic is on the right track in logistics activity," he affirmed.

For its part, Bisonó indicated that the arrival of Amazon Air not only strengthens connectivity and trade, but also opens opportunities for SMEs and for attracting new investments.

"It's great news that this plane is joining to bring cargo. In addition to logistics, we have been in contact with this great company to discuss support for SMEs in technology and communications. This is a first step of a new investment in a country with economic, social and political stability," said the minister.

President Luis Abinader had previously announced that Amazon will establish seven weekly flights to the Dominican Republic, with a total capacity of 770 metric tons, which will make the country the first Amazon Air hub in the Caribbean and the second in Latin America.
