An ICE agent fatally shoots a man resisting arrest in the Chicago area

New York.- An agent of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) fatally shot a man in the Chicago area who resisted arrest and tried to run over the agents, authorities reported this Friday. "He attempted to drive his vehicle against the arresting team, hitting an officer and dragging him while fleeing the scene. Fearing for his life, the officer fired his firearm and hit the subject. Both the officer and the subject received immediate medical attention and were transported to a local hospital", ICE explained in a statement.

The man's death, who authorities say was in the United States illegally, was certified at the hospital, while the agent suffered "serious injuries and is in stable condition," according to ICE. The incident occurred in Franklin Park (Illinois), a suburb west of the city of Chicago near O'Hare International Airport. "Viral videos on social media and activists inciting undocumented immigrants to resist law enforcement not only spread misinformation, but also undermine public safety, as well as that of our agents and those detained," said Tricia McLaughlin, the Department of Homeland Security's Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs. According to local sources and social groups in Chicago, ICE has carried out a greater number of arrests and immigration raids in the city - as well as in the rest of the state of Illinois - as part of its Operation Midway Blitz. However, the magnitude of the deployment has been, for the moment, much more limited than what the US president, Donald Trump, promised with his threats last weekend, which even foreshadowed the sending of the US National Guard, as previously happened in Los Angeles and Washington D.C. "I love the smell of deportations in the morning... Chicago is about to find out why it's called the Department of WAR," Trump posted on Truth Social last Saturday with an image of himself created by artificial intelligence simulating the movie 'Apocalypse Now'. However, Chicago residents and those in the surrounding areas remain vigilant regarding the presence of ICE agents and vehicles throughout the area, reporting activity to hotlines and social media profiles that monitor raids. This Friday, Trump announced that Memphis, in the state of Tennessee, will be the next city to which he will send National Guard troops as part of his campaign against the "growing crime" in the streets, although he warned that "he would have preferred to go to Chicago".
