Berlin reiterates that it will recognize Palestine only at the end of a negotiated process

Berlin.- German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reiterated this Monday that his country supports recognizing Palestine only towards the end of a negotiated process for the creation of two states - that is, with Israel's approval - but stressed that this process must begin now without further delay.

In statements to the press before traveling to New York to participate in the UN General Assembly, Wadephul assured that the new Israeli offensive on Gaza is "a completely wrong path" to find a solution to the Middle East conflict, which on the contrary requires more humanitarian aid for the enclave, an immediate ceasefire and the release of the Israeli hostages.

"All steps towards an illegal annexation of the occupied territories also undermine the opportunity to resolve the conflict in a lasting way; however distant it may seem right now, a negotiated two-state solution is the path that can make Israelis and Palestinians a life of peace, security and dignity possible," the minister asserted.

"For Germany, the recognition of a Palestinian state is rather at the end of the process. But a process of this type must begin now," he emphasized.

Wadephul also defended the UN, before the General Assembly of the organization begins in New York, as a unique forum for cooperation in a world marked by international conflicts.

"The United Nations is the only indispensable forum that brings the world together. For this, a strong and capable organization is needed to act," he stated, aware that solutions to crises such as the war of Russia against Ukraine or that of Israel against the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas will be debated in New York.

"Today, it is the swarms of drones, the missile parades and the nuclear threats that aim to undermine faith in the rule of law," stated the German minister before alluding to the war of aggression of Russian President Vladimir Putin against Ukraine.

"With his war of aggression against Ukraine, which is contrary to international law, Putin opposes everything that the United Nations represents," Wadephul pointed out, who also alluded to Iran and its nuclear intentions.

"Iran has been massively enriching its uranium reserves for years, refusing to allow the International Atomic Energy Agency to fully inspect its nuclear program," he said.

In addition, Wadephul commented, among other crises, on the one affecting Sudan, where "a civil war that has caused the worst humanitarian catastrophe of today", the threat to the population in Haiti due to the presence of armed gangs there, the rise in sea level or the underdevelopment and poverty that affects millions of people.
