Santo Domingo. - The meteorological analyst, Jean Suriel, reported that the climatic phenomenon of "La Niña" has returned, well-known in the Dominican Republic for generating favorable conditions for the production of torrential rains and significant floods: also with this phenomenon, temperatures become colder than normal in a large part of the country.

Suriel highlighted that La Niña is a natural phenomenon that occurs when the waters of the equatorial Pacific Ocean cool more than normal: this change in temperature also alters the winds and air circulation in the atmosphere, generating indirect effects in the Caribbean region. In that sense, the most prominent influence in Dominican territory is intense rainfall: more troughs, tropical waves, low pressures, and atmospheric disturbances increase the potential for flash floods. Another important factor, the Caribbean region receives the incidence of more frontal systems and more polar air masses because La Niña modifies the polar jet stream, allowing cold fronts to reach the country more. With La Niña, temperatures are colder in the mountainous area: especially in Valle Nuevo, which in the coming months could register lows of between -7°C and -8°C; as well as in Pico Duarte, sub-zero temperatures from November. Jean Suriel stated: "Let's not let our guard down with storms and hurricanes because La Niña reduces the shearing winds: especially in the Caribbean Sea with the left-handed cyclones that could affect DR" he said. !! The La Niña phenomenon will last until February or March 2026, to give way to the Neutral Phase: with periods
