Supermarkets will be open until 10:00 PM

SANTO DOMINGO. – During the passage of Tropical Storm Melissa, supermarkets in the country will be able to operate until 10:00 p.m. to guarantee the supply of the population, while vehicles transporting perishable foods, fuels, and medicines are exempt from the restrictions imposed by the preventive measures, informed the director of the Emergency Operations Center (COE), General (r) Juan Manuel Méndez. The announcement was made after a meeting headed by President Luis Abinader, with the participation of the main national authorities, to assess the behavior of Melissa and its effects on different provinces.

Méndez confirmed that the same alert levels issued on Tuesday night remain: nine provinces on red alert, thirteen on yellow, and three on green, due to heavy rains and possible flooding. He warned that the system is behaving erratically and slowly, moving at about 4 kilometers per hour, which increases the uncertainty about its trajectory and effects.

By instructions of President Abinader, the Government's priority is to protect human lives, which is why the suspension of teaching this Thursday and the closure of public and private work from 1:00 p.m. in the provinces under alert is maintained. Rainfall accumulations are expected to exceed 300 millimeters, extending until the early hours of Friday. On Friday, it will be evaluated whether the preventive measures continue or are adjusted, according to the evolution of the storm.
