The Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium: An Icon of Dominican Baseball

SANTO Domingo. With 68 years of history, the Quisqueya Juan Marichal Stadium is one of the most emblematic sports venues in the Dominican Republic. Inaugurated on October 23, 1955, under the name Estadio Trujillo, this stadium has witnessed countless historical moments in Dominican baseball.

The Construction and Inauguration The construction of the stadium was completed in just 11 months, with a cost of RD$3.2 million, including one million that was paid to Mrs. María Martínez de Trujillo for the land. Doctor Joaquín Balaguer, who at that time held the position of Secretary of State for Education, Fine Arts and Cults, gave the inaugural speech, highlighting the importance of the stadium as part of the "Trujillo Era" and its educational and cultural impact on Dominican youth. The inaugural game featured the eastern stars who melted as hosts since they had won the championship in 1954 and the tigres del licey. Alcibiades Colon connected the first indisputable in the new stadium when in the second inning of the game he put the ball in no man's land between the center and right fields.

Remodeling and Improvements

Over the years, the Quisqueya Stadium has undergone several renovations and improvements. In 2007, it underwent a renovation that expanded its number of seats and improved the overall aesthetics of the field. In 2010, the grandstand area was reduced from 9,600 to 9,500 seats to expand the "AA" boxes from 5,843 to 7,443 seats. In 2014, it was renovated again and the surface area of the grandstands was reduced from 9,500 to 8,015 seats.

The Quisqueya Stadium has a capacity to hold 13,186 people, although it originally had a larger capacity. It has been the venue for numerous sporting and cultural events, including the Caribbean Series on several occasions. It has also hosted concerts by international artists such as Shakira, Ricky Martin, and Enrique Iglesias. Controversies and Debates In recent years, the Quisqueya Stadium has been the subject of debate and controversy. Some have questioned its state of conservation and have called for its remodeling or even its demolition. However, others argue that the stadium is a historical and cultural icon that must be preserved.

Recently, a project has been announced to build a new baseball stadium in Ciudad Ganadera, with a projected investment of over RD$5,000 million.
