Japanese airline cancels 65 flights for Airbus A320 software update

Tokyo.- All Nippon Airways (ANA), one of Japan's two major airlines, canceled 65 domestic flights to perform the software update needed on its Airbus A320 aircraft, after risks were found for the flight control system due to solar radiation, leaving around 9,400 people affected. The announced cancellations affected 34 of the Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft in the fleet of the Japanese airline, which asked its passengers to check its website for the updated status of the flights. The necessary computer update takes approximately four hours per aircraft and will be carried out sequentially.

The Japanese company joins the aviation firms that have been affected globally by the findings of the aircraft manufacturer Airbus, which in previous hours reported that strong solar radiation could corrupt data necessary for flight control functions in its A320 series aircraft (which includes the A319, A320 and A321 models), and asked operators to take measures.

Approximately 6,000 aircraft could be affected, according to information gathered by the Japanese network.

The defect was discovered after a plane operated by a US airline experienced a sudden loss of altitude in late October, an incident that left several people injured.
