Authorities noted that it is an active and ongoing investigation, and they have not offered further details about the incident or the deceased. The lethal use of force by the Border Patrol has become normalized in recent years, parallel to a hardening of immigration policies and a greater military presence in the area. Civil organizations have documented hundreds of deaths linked to the actions of immigration agents, including people shot, killed in vehicle pursuits, or who died in custody after not receiving adequate medical attention. Among the most controversial cases are cross-border shootings, where agents on US territory have killed young people who were on the Mexican side, which has called into question the legal limits of state force and the possibility of reparations for the families. According to records from the Southern Border Communities Coalition (SBCC), a coalition of more than 60 organizations that advocates for the rights of migrants and the reform of border policies between the United States and Mexico, since January 2010, 351 people have died as a result of confrontations with CBP agents.
