A 5.7 magnitude earthquake shook the Indonesian island of Java, the most populated in the archipelago, this Tuesday, without authorities reporting any victims or material damage at the moment. The earthquake occurred in the south of East Java province at a depth of 138 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), which records seismic activity worldwide. The nearest town to the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at 8:20 local time (1:20 GMT), is Jatiroto, located 20.8 kilometers southeast.

Yogyakarta, a city known for its cultural heritage, is 98.9 kilometers east-southeast of the point where the earthquake originated. Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area of great seismic and volcanic activity that is shaken each year by about 7,000 earthquakes, most of moderate magnitude.
