A North Carolina court sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole a young man who, when he was 15 years old, murdered his brother and four other people in an attack that occurred in October 2022.
The now-accused, identified as Austin Thompson, pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon. With his statement, he sought to avoid a prolonged trial that, as he explained to the court, would have caused greater suffering to the affected families and the community.
According to the details presented in court, the attack began at his residence, where he killed his older brother. Subsequently, he went out armed into the neighborhood and shot at several people, leaving a total of five fatalities and several injured, including a law enforcement officer.
