Violence after death 'El Mencho' caused suspension of women's Clásico and Querétaro-Juarez

Mexico City.- The violence unleashed after the death of the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CCJNG), Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes 'El Mencho', has also affected the development of Mexican soccer, which saw the Women's Classic, between Guadalajara and América, and the Querétaro-Juárez of the MX League, which was to be played at the La Corregidora Stadium, where the Mexican national team is scheduled to play a friendly against Iceland on Wednesday, suspended for security reasons. 'El Mencho', 59 years old, died on Sunday while being transported by air to Mexico City by federal forces, after an operation in the municipality of Tapalpa, 130 kilometers south of Guadalajara, capital of Jalisco (west).

The operation in that rural area led to an armed confrontation in which military personnel repelled an aggression, resulting in seven alleged CJNG members killed - including the leader himself -, two detainees and the seizure of high-powered weaponry and armored vehicles, including rocket launchers, according to the Army. In response to the action, the so-called 'narco-blockades' began in different parts of southern Jalisco, the birthplace of the CJNG, with burned vehicles and closed roads.

Faced with this wave of violence, which spread to neighboring states such as Michoacán, Colima and Nayarit (west), and later to Guanajuato, Aguascalientes (center), Tamaulipas, Baja California (north), Guerrero and Quintana Roo (south), Liga MX decided to suspend the Querétaro-Juárez match, from matchday 7 of the Clausura tournament, which was to be played at the Estadio La Corregidora in Jalisco.

The Mexico-Iceland match, scheduled for Wednesday in Jalisco

The La Corregidora Stadium is also the venue where the Mexican national team, coached by Javier Aguirre, is scheduled to face Iceland on Wednesday in a friendly match to prepare for the 2026 World Cup, which, in principle, has not been rescheduled. For security reasons, the most anticipated match of the tenth matchday of the Liga MX Femenil, the classic between Guadalajara and América, at the Akron stadium, was also suspended. This same venue will host four World Cup matches in four months (South Korea-European Play-off Winner, Mexico-South Korea, Colombia-FIFA Play-off Winner and the one presumed to be decisive Uruguay-Spain).

Scare in the Necaxa-Querétaro women's

Before the wave of violence erupted, the women's soccer match was disrupted by the suspension for a few moments of the match between Necaxa and Querétaro, at the Victoria stadium in Aguascalientes, after some detonations were heard that caused the referee to send the players to the dressing rooms until confirming that the situation was under control. The Mexican Football Federation clarified, through a statement, that there was no real risk for those who were in the stadium, since the origin of the scare was the escape of a vehicle outside the venue, whose snapping sounds were confused with gunshots. The match continued after confirming that there was no danger.
