Construction of the Port of Manzanillo advances and is emerging as an economic engine for the North region

The Dominican Government continues to make planned progress on the rehabilitation and expansion of the multipurpose port of Manzanillo, a strategic work to strengthen national logistics capacity, boost trade and generate new development opportunities in the country's Northern region. The project, which is being carried out in the port of Manzanillo, in the province of Montecristi, aims to turn this terminal into the main container port in the Caribbean and into an economic, logistical, and tourist development hub. The initiative is part of a modernization program financed with 100 million dollars by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and includes the construction of a new 220-meter-long pier, with the capacity to receive Panamax and Post-Panamax type ships, as well as the rehabilitation of the Navarrete–Montecristi highway to improve regional connectivity. The plan also contemplates a hybrid operation model that will allow for the simultaneous handling of commercial cargo and tourist cruises, similar to the scheme applied in Taíno Bay, in Puerto Plata.

This is in addition to new energy and tourism infrastructure in the area, including the Manzanillo Power Land thermal power plant, which will provide 414 megawatts to the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI) and the Super 8 by Wyndham Manzanillo hotel. Authorities estimate that the works will be completed in the second quarter of 2027, when the port operates as a leading logistics, energy and tourism complex in the Caribbean.
