Saharan dust will arrive in the country from this Friday and will increase during the next week

Santo Domingo.– The Dominican Republic's Meteorology Institute (Indomet) reported that new Saharan dust particles will begin to affect the national territory from the night of this Friday, causing a rise in temperatures, a reduction in rainfall, and possible allergic reactions in the population. They explained that the initial concentrations will be light, although they are expected to increase gradually during the weekend and the coming days. “These particles are expected to begin increasing during the week, especially from Wednesday onwards, going from light to moderate and then to high concentrations”, indicated the specialist. As explained, this atmospheric phenomenon favors a drier and hotter environment, because it limits cloud formation and reduces rainfall over a large part of the country.

Warning about allergies and respiratory problems

Florian warned that the presence of Saharan dust can generate allergic processes and respiratory complications, especially in people with asthma, sinusitis or other pulmonary conditions.

He also explained that dust concentrations usually decrease when tropical waves or humid air masses arrive, as these displace the particles and favor the increase of cloudiness and rainfall. However, he noted that throughout the cyclonic season, which officially begins on June 1st, the presence of Saharan dust could remain recurrently in the region.

They recommend using masks and staying hydrated

Faced with the increase of these particles in the environment, the authorities recommended that the population use masks, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, stay well hydrated, and wear light clothing. They also urged people with allergies or respiratory illnesses to consult their doctors for guidance on preventive medications and appropriate treatments.
