Santo Domingo.- The President of the Dominican Republic, Luis Abinader, announced this Monday that during his appearance at the UN General Assembly at the end of this month, he will insist on the "abandonment" of the international community to neighboring Haiti, which has been mired in a deep crisis for years.
"When I go to the United Nations this September, I will say and repeat to the international community about its abandonment of Haiti," the ruler indicated in his Monday press conference.

It will also address the situation "in bilateral conversations" that it holds during the UN General Assembly, he affirmed after being questioned about the warning from the President of Kenya, Wiliam Ruto, that the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSS) in Haiti, led by the African country, will expire next October. Furthermore, Ruto asked the UN Security Council to "guide a responsible transition". The MSS is an initiative requested by the Haitian authorities, led by Kenya, financially backed by the United States, and approved in 2023 by the United Nations Security Council. In his statements, President Abinader criticized that the MSS has not received the necessary economic resources for its complete operability in the impoverished nation, where the mission, which activated in 2024, seeks to support the security forces of the island nation in their fight against armed gangs, which control 90% of the capital and other areas of the country. The MSS is made up of about 1,000 personnel, most of them from Kenya. According to UN data, Haiti recorded a 24% increase in intentional homicides in the first six months of the year, reaching a total of 4,026 murders. In addition, gang violence has caused the internal displacement of around 1.3 million people.
