Electronic shackles, periodic presentation, and impediment to exit imposed on Ángel Martínez

Santiago. – The judge of the Permanent Attention Office of the Judicial District of this city, Yiberty Polanco, imposed this Wednesday coercive measures against the communicator Ángel Martínez, accused of extortion, defamation and insult to the detriment of the businessman Arnulfo Gutiérrez. The businessman's lawyer, Juliana Ramia Capellán, argued that Martínez represents a flight risk, as he does not have a known address in the Dominican Republic. For his part, the legal representative of the communicator, Carlos Manuel Mesa, questioned the court's decision, understanding that it had "contradicted itself" in the reasoning for issuing its ruling. According to the accusation, Ángel Martínez would have engaged in behaviors typified in articles 306 and 400 of the Penal Code, by allegedly blackmailing and threatening Gutiérrez, while making statements that the plaintiff calls defamatory. The Public Ministry also cited Law 53-07 on High Technology Crimes and Offenses, arguing that the communicator has used digital platforms to attack numerous people and that there are multiple complaints against him for the same type of behavior. Earlier, while being escorted through the courthouse hallways, Ángel Martínez did not offer statements to the press. While going down the stairs of the Courthouse, he suffered a fall.
