Family Demands Justice for the Death of Carlos Flores

Amidst much sadness and helplessness, journalist Maura Flores cries out for justice for her father.

Santo Domingo.- On May 8, 2024, in the morning, Carlos Flores died after being hit by a black scooter on Barney Morgan street, between 10th and 12th streets of Ensanche Espaillat. The vehicle was driven by Jeffry Núñez King, who left the scene after the incident. According to eyewitnesses, the victim was dragged by the motorcycle, which caused a cervical fracture and severe bleeding from the mouth, nose, and ears. After the incident, Núñez King went to his residence, took a shower, went to his workplace, and later informed his mother about what happened.

That same day, neighbors gave the Flores family security camera recordings. Jeffry Núñez King was identified and later surrendered to the authorities. According to family members, he was informally received by some agents at the headquarters of the General Directorate of Security and Ground Transit (DIGESETT). Some witnesses who initially collaborated retracted their statements. Only two recordings of the event were preserved. During the first hearing, held on May 10, the judge imposed periodic reporting and a financial guarantee as coercive measures. No proof of residency or employment letter was required. The victim's family expressed their disagreement with the decision. The judicial process has presented some irregularities denounced by the family members, including the alleged disappearance of videos from the file, the lack of documents in the INACIF, and indications of the accused's links with influential people. It was also reported that Nuñez King was involved in a previous accident with another injured person. A year after the event, the main trial continues at the DIGESETT headquarters without a final sentence.
