SANTO DOMINGO.- A court in Duarte province issued an order to open trial against former councilman Elías José Polanco Taveras, accused of illicit trafficking of migrants.
The accusation presented by prosecutor Arturo Vélez was accepted by Judge Isolina Peralta Contreras, of the First Instruction Court, after validating the evidence that will be debated in the next phase of the process.

Polanco Taveras faces charges for violating article 2 of Law 137-03 on Illicit Trafficking of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons, to the detriment of a citizen. According to investigations, the former councilman of the municipality of Tenares, Hermanas Mirabal province, allegedly engaged in these illicit activities since 2018. The official inquiries began in 2023 and culminated with the formal presentation of charges that mark the beginning of the trial today. The competent court will set the date for the hearing in the coming days, where the admitted evidence will be presented and the criminal responsibility of the former municipal official will be decided.
