Santo Domingo.– The recent enactment of the new Penal Code of the Dominican Republic has been enthusiastically received by high-ranking leaders of the National Congress, who have highlighted the legislative progress as a milestone in the strengthening of the country's justice system.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Alfredo Pacheco, publicly thanked President Luis Abinader for having enacted the legislative piece, which he described as "a conquest resulting from the broadest possible consensus and the commitment to a stronger, more modern and effective justice."

"Today we are moving towards a more just, firm, and up-to-date justice system," Pacheco expressed, highlighting the work of the various sectors that made the progress possible. In similar terms, the president of the Senate, Ricardo de los Santos, spoke, stating that with this step, the rule of law in the Dominican Republic is strengthened. "From the Senate, we work with commitment and openness to achieve modern legislation that protects fundamental rights and more forcefully punishes the crimes that affect us most," he wrote on his official account. Both legislators agreed to point out that the enactment of the new Penal Code represents a response to a historical demand of Dominican society, and a demonstration of political will to advance in matters of justice, institutionalism and rights. President Abinader enacted the controversial reform after years of debates in Congress, marking a milestone in the country's penal legislation, with changes that seek to update the legal framework in the face of current challenges in terms of criminality, corruption, and human rights.
